WD | Crashing Into Gratitude

Feeling Extra Lucky ūüćĬ†

Whether it's through meditation or writing, I love a consistent gratitude practice.

If you're sick of hearing about gratitude
Hear me out because there's a big piece people misunderstand.

What people miss is the long-term mission.

What actually happens when you put in the work and practice it enough.

Yes, it helps you think about the good things in your life.

Yes, it helps you focus on the present moment.

And you briefly feel better because you're reminding yourself of all the good you have.

(all great things btw)

But the long-term result only comes with consistency.

When you practice gratitude daily, your thoughts begin to shift.

You start to see the good in every situation.

Then, after a while...

You start to LOOK for the good in every situation.

This is where the magic happens.

Because you completely change how you view your life.

You become intentional about seeking the gems in every moment, regardless of how it may appear on the surface.

By changing how you view life... you end up changing your life.

"Real discover is not in seeing new lands, but in having new eyes."

So when you hear people preaching about gratitude journaling, instead of thinking it's all fluff...

Stop for a moment to think about how you view your day.

  • Are you seeking beauty in the details?
  • Are you even noticing it?
  • When was the last time you stopped to appreciate all you have?
  • When have you paused¬†to recognize how precious and fragile life is?

It can happen quickly and turn in an instant.

Don't wait until a dark moment to appreciate all you have.

Your partner who's always there for you
Clothes on your back
Roof over your head
Food on your plate today
That friend who always makes you laugh
The other friend that makes you want to be a better person
Fresh ground coffee beans
The sound of waves crashing on the sand
Sun on your face

Making it a daily commitment to write one thing you're grateful for rewires your brain.

It completely changes the way you think about life.

You go from a 'lacking' mindset to a 'holy fuck look how great life is' mindset.

This is where I love the phrase 'life isn't happening to you, it's happening for you'.

It's happening 24/7, we just need to pay better attention.

ūüöô¬†

On Wednesday morning at 6:41am, I was driving to meet my brother in Beaver Creek, CO to snowboard for a few days.

It was 25 degrees and the area had 4-6" of snow the day before.

I was driving downhill at about 40mph in the back of a pack of 5 cars.

Trailing behind and doing my best to stay safe, I saw there were no cars behind me so I moved from the median to the center of the road to be a little bit away from the center divider...

As I changed lanes, my 4Runner (4WD w/ snow tires) started sliding and going sideways.

I tried to correct the truck and when I turned I ended up t-boning the median.

I continued spinning to my left, facing uphill and completed a 360 before regaining control.

Airbags went off when I slammed into the median, but luckily I was able to get to the shoulder safely.

I just feel so incredibly lucky that I went into the median and not the side of the road.

That I was able to walk away with only some sore ribs and a mild headache.

(I took this a few minutes after the crash)

It was my first year buying a ski pass and it was going to be my first time putting it to use.

I was on my first mini-vacation since starting PER - taking 2-3 days off to board with my brother who drove out from CA.

How quickly life can change.

I had to get a tow truck to take me 80 miles back to Denver and am waiting to hear back if my truck is totaled.

I found out I don't have collision coverage on my plan (no clue how) and the cop wrote me a citation.

And a week ago I wrote about how I had migraines because I was stressed about my business.

Funny how none of that seems to matter now.

The truck can be replaced, I can pay the ticket, I can board again, I can keep working on the biz.

But my health is everything.

I feel incredibly lucky and so grateful for my life.

It's amazing to get reminded of what truly matters and to not get bogged down by the little crap in life.

The truth is, you don't have to get into a car accident to realize you're lucky.

We're all lucky.

Just the fact you were born means you were incredibly lucky (1 in 400 trillion)!

If you're moving, thinking, eating, traveling, loving, and acting freely...

You're pretty fucking lucky.

My ask of you today is to pause and pay it forward...
Close this article and call 3 friends/family members to tell them that you're thinking about them.
And that your relationship means a lot to you.

That's it.

It'll make their day and yours too.

Stay safe and I appreciate every single one of you for your support on this journey ūüôĆūüŹĹ
